BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team (7-12) could not avoid being swept, as Evan Sharpley hit two home runs to power Notre Dame past the Hoyas, 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. Senior Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep[Virginia]) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out six over 6.0 innings. Senior Matt Ianetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael's Academy [UNC]) and freshman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Ballaire) each went 2-for-4 to lead the Hoyas offense. With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, Chandler hit Greg Sherry with a pitch, pushing Jeremy Barnes across home plate for the game's first run. Brett Lilley followed with a two-run single to give the Fighting Irish a 3-0 lead In the top of the fifth inning, Evan Sharpley hit a solo home run to straightaway centerfield, extending the Notre Dame lead to 4-0. The Fighting Irish offense kept going, as Sharpley hit a two-run home run, his second of the game, off Grady McConnell in the top of the seventh inning, putting Notre Dame in front, 6-0 the eventual final score. Eric Maust earned the victory, tossing 8.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out five. The Hoyas will resume action against Mount St. Mary's when the travel to Emmitsburg, Md. On March 26 for a 3 p.m. game.
