Georgetown Baseball Rallies Again, Earns Series Win over USF With 8-7 Triumph

March 30, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team earned another dramatic win in Tampa this afternoon, scoring seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings en route to an 8-7 win over USF. After coming from behind to win last night by scoring six runs in the seventh inning, the Hoyas erased a 7-1 deficit and received a two-out, two-run double by senior Matt Harrigan in the eighth to get the win.

The big inning for the Hoyas started when junior Greg Pustizzi was plunked, sophomore Chip Malt singled up the middle and pinch-hitter Dan Capeless walked to load the bases for the second inning in a row. With one out, freshman Erick Fernandez walked, which allowed pinch-runner Rob Begin to score. Senior Matt Iannetta followed with a fielder's choice to third that scored Malt, but also resulted in the second out of the inning.

Freshman Sean Lamont kept the inning alive with a RBI single to left that cut the lead to 7-6 and Harrigan came through with the biggest hit of the game, a two-run double down the right-field line, that gave the Hoyas the win.

In the seventh, sophomore Tommy Lee doubled down the right-field line before junior Kelly Muir was hit by pitch and Fernandez walked to load the bases. Iannetta lifted a sacrifice fly to right and Lamont hit a run-scoring single through the right side to cut the lead to 7-3, before consecutive strikeouts ended the inning.

Senior Erick Chandler allowed one earned run over four innings but was replaced by sophomore Alex Meyer who struggled in his stead. However, seniors Grady McConnell and Daniel Kennedy, along with sophomore Jack Bender, shutout the Bulls over the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits between them. McConnell would throw two scoreless innings to improve his record to 2-0, while Kennedy would earn his second save of the series.

Baumann put Georgetown on the board in the fourth with his fifth homerun of the season over the right-center wall.

The Hoyas will return to the field on Tuesday, April 1 in Baltimore, Md. when they travel to take on Coppin State at 3 p.m.
