Georgetown Loses Hard-Fought BIG EAST Game at Home to Louisville, 4-3

May 2, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team lost a well-played contest under the lights of Shirley Povich Field on Friday night, 4-3, to Louisville. The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game as both pitchers lasted into the seventh, but the Hoyas fell to 2-7 in one-run games during the 2008 season.

Sophomore Tim Adleman pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed only three earned runs but ran out of gas in the seventh when he allowed the eventual game-winning RBI double to Stewart Ijames. Sophomore Cary Piligian along with seniors Grady McConnell and Daniel Kennedy kept the Hoyas within striking distance by shutting the Cardinals out for two and one-thirds innings.

The Hoyas took the lead in third inning when sophomore Chip Malt started the frame with a double to right. With two outs, freshman Erick Fernandez hit a groundball that was misplayed by UofL shortstop John Dao. Malt would come home from second on the play and nudge the Blue and Gray in front, 3-2.

Down 2-0 in the second inning, Fernandez led-off with a single to right-center before moving into scoring position after a failed pickoff by Louisville. During the same at-bat, sophomore Dan Capeless homered to right field off a flustered Justin Marks to tie the score. Marks would earn the win after going eight strong innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out 10 Hoya batters.

The Hoyas and Cardinals will resume their series tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. from Shirley Povich Field.
