Baseball Looking for Some Home Cooking, Prepares for Rutgers This Weekend

April 10, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team faces-off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this upcoming weekend at Shirley Povich Field. The two teams will play a three-game set beginning on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., continuing on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and concluding at noon on Sunday. The Hoyas and Scarlet Knights are trying to move up in the BIG EAST standings in an effort to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. Saturday's game will also be Hoya Blue's Day at the Ballpark as all students are invited to come attend.

Hoya Blue and the Diamond Club have teamed up to provide free transportation to students and team friends who want to cheer on our Hoyas this Saturday. The bus will be leaving campus at 11:30 from McDonough Arena and we'll be returning after the game. Additionally, Hoya Blue will provide food and refreshments at the game to help provide that true baseball experience. If interested, e-mail ibleedhoyablue@gmail.com for more information to reserve your spot on the bus.

Georgetown defeated Navy on Wednesday in Annapolis, Md., 6-0. Junior right-hander Jimmy Saris struck out 11 Midshipmen batters and lasted a season-high seven innings to earn the win. Three Hoyas had multi-hit games and sophomore Tommy Lee drove in two runs for the Blue and Gray. Last weekend, the Hoyas were swept by Villanova despite holding leads in all three contests.

Rutgers fields a much different looking team in 2008 with the loss of six position starters, including consensus First Team All-American Todd Frazier and four others who were selected in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft. The Scarlet Knights won both the regular season and tournament titles and tied the school record with 42 victories. Head Coach Fred Hill is in his 25th season at Rutgers. One of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, Hill owns an impressive 935 wins in 31 seasons as a collegiate coach (787 - Rutgers).

The Hoyas have won only one game against Rutgers since 1998, a record of 1-27 during that time. The lone win came at Shirley Povich Field in 2005 when the Hoyas won a pitchers duel, 2-1.
