Washington, D.C. - Sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored 21 points and senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored 15 points as No. 11 Georgetown used a second half run to pull away from Georgetown for a 62-50 win over a pesky St. John's team in front of 9,018 at Verizon Center. It was the 10th win in the last 12 games for the Hoyas, who improve to 23-4 overall and 13-3 in the BIG EAST, while St. John's falls to 10-17 and 4-11 in league play. Georgetown has won their last 20 games at Verizon Center, including 14-straight against conference opponents. Georgetown lead by four points, 40-36, nearing the mid-point of the second half, but a three-pointer from St. John's junior Anthony Mason, Jr. pulled the Red Storm to within a point, 40-39, with 12:23 to play. The Hoyas proceeded to go on a 12-2 run over a span of 5:42, taking a 52-41 lead on a conventional three-point play from Summers with 6:41 to play. The run was started on three-pointers from senior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) and Summers, and a conventional three-point play from Hibbert pushed the lead to eight points. The Red Storm pulled to within eight points, 52-44, on a dunk from Justin Burrell, but two free throws from Hibbert and a three-pointer from freshman guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) gave the Hoyas their biggest lead, 57-44, with 3:50 play. Georgetown had led by four points at halftime (27-23), but St. John's tied the game less than two minutes into the second frame after a dunk from Mason, Jr. and a layup from D.J. Kennedy. The Hoyas took the lead back on baskets from Freeman and Hibbert, but St. John's came back to tie the game at 31-all on a Burrell dunk and one from Dele Coker. GU again took the lead back, this time on a Summers three, but a three-pointer from Paris Horne knotted the game at 36-all before the Hoyas made their decisive run. The Hoyas jumped on top early in the game, taking an 8-4 lead after a three-pointer and a layup from Summers and a jumper from Sapp. The lead grew to seven points, 16-9, after an 8-2 run over 4:42 was capped by a three-pointer from Freeman. St. John's went more than five minutes without a field goal, breaking the scoreless skid on a layup from D.J. Kennedy that cut the GU lead to five points, 16-11. The Hoyas took an eight point lead on two occasions, first on a three-pointer from Summers and then on a tip-in from Hibbert with 5:40 to play that extended the margin to 21-13. St. John's managed to cut the lead to three points, 21-18, on a layup from Sean Evans with 4:30 to play in the half. After a pair of Wallace free throws pushed the GU lead back to six points, 24-18, baskets from Dele Coker and Rob Thomas helped to cut the margin to one point, 24-23, with 1:23 to play but a three-pointer from Sapp made it 27-23 at the break. Summers hit 7-of-15 shots from the field, including a career-high with five three-pointers, for 21 points and collected four rebounds, while Hibbert was 5-of-8 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line for 17 points, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Freeman added nine points, Wallace finished with eight points, four rebounds and four assists and Sapp added seven points, four rebounds and four assists. The Hoyas shot 44.4 percent from the floor (20-of-45), hit 40.0 percent of their three-pointers (10-of-25) and a season-high 87.5 percent from the free throw line (14-of-16). SJU controlled the boards, 28-24, but the Hoyas forced 17 turnovers. Georgetown plays its final road game of the season on Saturday, March 1, visiting Marquette in a pivotal BIG EAST Conference matchup at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
