BIG EAST Announces Menfs Basketball Conference Matchups for 2008-09 Season

Washington, D.C. - The two-time defending BIG EAST Regular season champion Georgetown Hoyas will host five of the seven conference opponents that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last year as well as having a total of nine games against teams that reached the postseason as the BIG EAST Conference announced league matchups for the 2008-09 season on Wednesday.

In 2008-09, the BIG EAST will play an 18-game conference schedule for the second-straight season. The 18-game format will allow teams to play each opponent once and three teams twice

The Hoyas will play home-and-home series against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Marquette (25-10), as well as a pair of games against Syracuse (21-14), which advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and Cincinnati, which played in the College Basketball Invitational.

Other home games includes appearances by NCAA Tournament participants Louisville (27-9), Pittsburgh (27-10) and West Virginia (26-11), as well as games against DePaul, Providence and Rutgers.

In addition to road games against Connecticut (24-9, NCAA), Notre Dame (25-8, NCAA) and Villanova (22-13, NCAA), the Blue and Gray will travel to play at St. Johnfs, Seton Hall and South Florida.

The decisions regarding repeat opponents are based on natural interest, geography, rivalries and television contractual obligations.

Georgetown won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship last year for the second-straight season, one of only four programs to accomplish that feat in league history and the first to do so since 1994-95. The Hoyas finished the season with a 28-6 overall record and a 13-3 slate in BIG EAST play. Georgetown advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season and was ranked No. 12 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll.
