Annapolis, Md. - It was only fitting that the winning goal in the Georgetown-Navy men's lacrosse game was scored by someone with the last name Mirabito. And since that goal was scored by Hoyas' sophomore attackman Ricky Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks), it was even better. Mirabito scored his third goal of the game with 1:42 left in overtime, lifting No. 4 Georgetown to a thrilling 11-10 win over No. 10 Navy in front of 7,135 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It was the first time that Ricky Mirabito faced his older brother, Navy's leading scorer, senior Nick Mirabito, as opponents.

It is the fourth-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 5-2 overall, while the Midshipmen fall to 8-2 overall. Georgetown has won the last five meetings in the series with Navy and won the Boyle Cup for the third-straight year. The GU-Navy game has been dedicated to Scott Boyle, a former official who passed away while officiating the game three years ago.

Navy won the opening face-off in overtime and held onto possession for more than two minutes, taking several shots, including one from Pat Moran that went just wide. Georgetown took over and senior Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School), who finished with a goal and three assists, found Mirabito in front of the crease. Mirabito pounded the ball past Navy goalie Tommy Phelan, giving the Hoyas an 11-10 win.

Navy had tied the game at 10-all in the final minute on a goal from Basil Dartsos. The Hoyas won the ensuing face-off and called time out with 24 seconds left, but turned the ball over. Navy raced upfield and a shot from Navy's Joe Lennon was saved by Georgetown goalie Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss). Kass threw a long pass upfield to senior Andrew Baird (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield), who took a shot with time winding down that deflected off of Phelan and sent the time to overtime.

Georgetown led by three goals (6-3) in the first half and added two more in the third quarter, taking its biggest lead on a goal from Mirabito off a feed from Cannon. The Midshipmen, however, rallied, scoring four-straight goals to cut the lead to 8-7, but Cannon found junior Jake Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Landon) in front of the net as the Hoyas took a 9-7 lead. Daratsos scored early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 9-8, but a goal from Cannon extended the lead to 10-8 before Navy came back to tie the game.

The Hoyas jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, scoring three in the first quarter and adding two more in the first three minutes of the second half. Navy held possession for the majority of the first seven minutes, but the Hoyas took a 1-0 advantage when Baird intercepted a clearing pass from Navy goalie Tommy Phelan at 8:24 and promptly deposited it past the goalie. Less than a minute later, Baird cut across the crease and finished off a feed from sophomore Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) at 7:28.

Navy's Mirabito cut the lead to 2-1 at the 6:45 mark, but senior Dan D'Agnes (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) scored over a tight defense after taking a feed from freshman Max Seligmann (Essex Falls, N.J./Delbarton) with two minutes left in the quarter as the Hoyas held a 3-1 lead. Three minutes into the second quarter, senior Scott Kahoe (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) held the ball at the top of the box and found a streaking Mirabito, who sent a low shot past Phelan, giving the Hoyas a 4-1 lead. Thirty seconds later, Brancaccio scored a man-up goal, rifling a shot from the top of the box, as GU extended its lead to 5-1. Navy scored twice in the second quarter, an unassisted tally from Brancaccio with 27 seconds left in the half extended GU's lead to 6-3.

Georgetown and Navy each took 32 shots while the Midshipmen held a 42-32 advantage in ground balls and the Hoyas won 11-of-24 face-offs. Baird and Mirabito finished with three goals apiece, while Cannon had four points (one goal, three assists) and Brancaccio added two goals.

Georgetown plays next on Tuesday, April 1, hosting Mount St. Mary's at the Multi-Sport Field. Face-off is slated for 3:45 p.m.
