Hoyas Soccer Week Five Recap

April 30, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team concluded its spring season during the weekend of April 26-27, 2008.

The Hoyas played two 90-minute matches on Saturday, a 1-0 loss to Virginia Commonwealth before a 3-2 loss to Towson.

Georgetown played very well in the first 60 minutes vs. VCU, attacking with good numbers but the VCU goalie was up to the challenge and was aided by the Hoyas hitting two posts. VCU got on the board late when they touched in a rebound off a 25-yard free kick.

The second game kicked off about an hour after the VCU game ended and Coach Wiese went with nine different starters from the first game. Neither team could muster many scoring chances in the first half as the teams went to the locker rooms scoreless.

Towson got two quick goals, scoring twice off crosses before Chandler Diggs sliced the Hoya deficit to 2-1 with a neatly place header. The Tigers posted another goal for a 3-1 advantage but Alex Verdi brought the Blue and Gray within 3-2. The final minutes was played inside of the Towson penalty box with Georgetown free kicks, corners and loose balls but the final buzzer sounded without the Hoyas adding the equalizer.

Georgetown finished the spring slate with a 5-3-1 record while the Hoyas netted 15 goals, and allowing just six opponent scores.

The spring season wrapped up with the post-season banquet on Saturday night at Maggiano's Little Italy on Wisconsin Avenue.

The major awards went to Alex Verdi (Most Improved), Robert Burnett (Most Valuable) and Richard Diaz (Ricardo Mendoza Coaches Award) for the player that best exemplifies the spirit of Georgetown soccer.

The soccer program also properly sent off graduating seniors Joe Devine and Mike Glaccum.

August 12, 2008 is the report date for the returning Hoyas next season.
