Hoya Men's Tennis Defeats East Carolina and Longwood at VCU 4x1 Invitational

Jan. 18, 2008

Richmond, Va. - The Georgetown University men's tennis team defeated East Carolina, 3-1 and shutout Longwood, 3-0 at the VCU Men's 4x1 Invitational in Richmond, Va. on Friday. The victories move the Hoyas to 2-0 in the spring portion of the season.

Against East Carolina, Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) rallied from a 5-2 deficit in a third-set tiebreaker against Stephen Whitwell to secure the win (6-2, 3-6, 7-6).

Sophomore Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) defeated Matt Peeler (6-2, 6-4) and the doubles tandem of senior Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Acad.) and sophomore David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) defeated Aleksey Kochetov (7-6, 4-6, 6-4), as the Hoyas defeated the Pirates, 3-1, avenging a 4-1 loss to East Carolina from a year ago.

Schnell was again instrumental in the Blue and Gray's win over Longwood. Schnell and Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton), the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) No. 12 pair in the region, defeated Milo and Mani Barajas-Alexander in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).

In singles play, Georgetown dropped just one set, as Lowell defeated David Cardosa (6-1, 6-2) in the second singles spot and Tillem (6-4, 6-4) beat Brandon Lindsay (6-4, 6-4) in the third.

Anthony Tan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Anglo-Chinese J.C.) held a one set advantage over Carlos Garcia de Andoain in the top singles match, before the match was decided. Tywang also held a 2-0 advantage in the final set after splitting the first two, 6-2, 4-6 with Billy Heird before the match was called.

The Hoyas return to action next Friday, Jan. 25 at No. 38 Old Dominion.
