Georgetown Men Travel to No. 38 Old Dominion and Navy This Weekend

Jan. 25, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The undefeated Georgetown University men's tennis team travels to Norfolk, Va. on Friday to take on No. 38 Old Dominion at 1 p.m., before heading to Annapolis, Md. to square off with Navy at noon on Saturday.

The Hoyas' opened the spring portion of their season last Friday, at the VCU 4+1 Tournament in Richmond, Va., defeating East Carolina 3-1, and Longwood 3-0. Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J/Millburn) picked up a decisive win in the top singles position against the Pirates to avenge their 4-1 loss from 2007.

Schnell and partner junior Kevin Walsh (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton), the No. 12 duo in the region, defeated Longwood's doubles pair in straight sets. Sophomores Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) and David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) picked up victories in the second and third singles positions to defeat the Lancers for the second consecutive season.

Senior captain Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) was the lone Hoya to register a win against last year's No.26 Old Dominion Monarchs. The blue and gray will face this year's edition, returning each member of last season's lineup.

Georgetown recorded a 5-2, victory over Navy on Feb. 3, 2007 to win their first against the Midshipmen since 1995. The victory earned mention in Joel Wertheim's "Ad In, Ad Out" column on SI.com after the men's team notched their fifth victory in 71 head-to-head matches against Navy since 1922. Senior captain Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn), junior Adam Gross (Quogue, N.Y./Westhampton), sophomore David Tillem (Atlanta, Ga./The Weber School) and Tywang all recorded singles victories in the match.
