Indoor Track & Field Opens 2008 Portion of the Season at Father Diamond Invitational

Washington, D.C. - Sophomore Tanore Barrow (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) broke her own Georgetown school-record in the shot put with a throw of 13.36m at the Father Diamond Meet at George Mason Fieldhouse on Saturday to highlight the start of the 2008 portion of the Georgetown indoor track and field season.

Barrow had previously set a mark of 12.98m on January 20, 2007.

Overall the men's team finished fourth with a total of 63.50 points, qualifying three for the BIG EAST Championships, while the women's squad finished in seventh place with 21 total points.

The Blue & Gray's male distance runners turned in a strong performance throughout the meet. Senior Justin Scheid (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXII) finished first overall in the one-mile run with a time of 4:16.31, while fellow senior Neil Grosscup (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) followed closely at 4:16.60, good for a second place, both posting BIG EAST qualifiying times.

The Hoyas placed two in the top five of the 800 meter run, as sophomore Dan Leyh (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and junior Ricky Barrios (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) finishing second and third respectively.

Sophomore Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was the third distance runner posting a BIG EAST qualifying time, coming in third at 2:26.56, to lead four top ten finishers in the 1000 meter run. Sophomore Kelvin Hill (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) placed fifth with a time of 2:32.00, senior Brandon Bonsey (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) placed sixth in 2:32.54 and sophomore John Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) rounded out the Hoya finishers at seventh with a time of 2:42.41. Senior Scott Bastek (Saddle River, N.J./Delbarton) tied for fourth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:58.43.
 

 

Senior Alex Baptiste (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) placed sixth overall in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.39m. Hoya's freshman Taryn Wentz (Marshville, N.C./Forest Hills) finished eighth, with a jump of 5.29m and sophomore Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northhampton) finished close behind in ninth with a jump of 5.23m. Junior Terrell Gissendanner (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) finished fourth with a jump of 7.11m, posting a BIG EAST qualifying time, while freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) placed No. 15 with a jump of 6.27m.

Freshman Matthew Jimenez (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) came in third place with a throw of 14.17m. Freshman Kyla Cook (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) finished No. 16 in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.86. Cook also finished in the No. 13 spot in the long jump with a distance of 4.92m.

The Georgetown men's 4X400 meter relay `A' came in eighth place with a time of 3:27.92.
