Junior Kenny Mitchell Posts an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time on the First Day of the Penn State Invitational

Day One Results

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University track & field team competed today at the Penn State National Invitational today held at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. The two-day event welcomes strong competition form around the country as the women's field features four teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 25 in No. 3 Tennessee, No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 12 Penn State and No. 16 North Carolina while the men's field includes one top 25 team in No. 3 Tennessee. Six student-athletes posted times worthy of the postseason with junior Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Weber) posted a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championship in the 60m.

For the women, junior Natasha LaBeaud (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) posted a BIG EAST and an ECAC qualifying time in the 5000m with a fifth-place finish, timing in at 17:21.23. Sophomore Kailin Collins (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) followed up in eighth place with a time of 17:32.41, also hitting both qualifying times.

Freshman Kyla Cook (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) also competed today picking up 3090 points in the pentathlon for 11th place.

For the men, Mitchell and freshman Ryan Carter (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) both competed in the 60m event. Each competitor solidified a BIG EAST and an IC4A qualifying time in the preliminary round with Carter running an impressive 6.79. In the semifinals, Mitchell shaved .13 off his preliminary time (6.87) to run a 6.74 and qualify for the final round of the event, where he placed fifth overall. His mark was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) competed in the 60m hurdles and recorded a postseason-worthy time in the preliminary round for both the BIG EAST Conference Championship and the IC4A Championship to advance to the semifinals of the event. Junior Terrell Gissendanner (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) also recorded a BE qualifying time in the preliminary round. Shaving .09 off his prelim time, Kinney timed in at 7.97 in the 60mH to finish eighth in the semifinals. He would place eighth in the final round as well.
 

 

The quartet of sophomore Levi Miller (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area), freshman Toby Ulm (Marlborough, U.K./St. John's School and Community College), senior Matt Debole (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) and sophomore Sandy Roberts (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) placed second for the Blue and Gray in the distance medley relay timing in at 9:53.32.

The Hoyas return to action tomorrow at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. The day will start at 10 a.m. with the women's 400m and the two-day event ends with the men's 4x400 relay, slated for 6:15 p.m.
