Washington, D.C. - Junior Andrew Bumbalough (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) was one of a handful of event winners at the 2008 Giegengack Invitational, hosted by Yale University at the Coxe Cage in New Haven, Conn. but his 3:58.46 is an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championship. Among the remaining top performances, sophomore Renee Tomlin and senior Maggie Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) each posted provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Championship with first and third-place performances in the 800m, respectively. The two-day event included three NCAA qualifying times (one automatic, two provisional), 28 total BIG EAST qualifying times (17 men, 11 women), 16 IC4A qualifying times for the men and nine ECAC qualifying times on the women's side. Bumbalough's performance in the men's mile set the standard and he now ranks second on Georgetown's all-time indoor mile list but senior Rasheed Thompson (Herndon, Va./Herndon) continued to highlight the event with a BE and IC4A qualifying time of 4:08.73 to place fifth in the event. Also qualifying for the BE and IC4A Championships was junior Terrell Gissendanner (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) whose 14.07 mark in the triple jump put him in fifth place. In his second fifth-place performance of the invitational, Gissendanner timed in at 8.23 in the preliminary round of the 60m hurdles and placed eighth overall in the final round. In the same event, freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) finished fourth in the preliminary round with a time of 8.18 and shaved .15 off for a time of 8.02 in the final round, enough for a second-place showing, and just one-hundredth of a second behind the leader - both met BE and IC4A qualifying standards. Two events were dominated by the Blue and Gray as five Hoyas finished in the top 10 of the 3000m while three GU runners placed in the top 10 of the 800m. In the 3000m, freshman Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) set the standard in the event with a time of 8:08.18. Senior Daniel Nunn (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo), sophomore Sandy Roberts (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), senior Justin Scheid (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXII) and junior Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) finished, second, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. All posted BE and IC4A qualifying times. Sophomore Danny Harris (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) won the 800m with a time of 1:53.03, enough to qualify for the BE and IC4A and sophomore John Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) followed up in fourth place (1:53.52) while sophomore Kelvin Hill (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) placed eighth (1:54.49) also posting BE and IC4A qualifying times. Rounding out the top performances on the men's side were sophomore Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) who finished the 1000m with a time of 2:24.72 to qualify for the postseason with the BE and IC4A championships while freshman Toby Ulm (Marlborough, U.K./St. John's School and Community Challenge) posted a BE and IC4A qualifying time of 48.65 in the 400m with a time of 48.65. Also qualifying for the IC4A was the Georgetown DMR squad who ran a 10:11.25 to place 12th in the event. Although Tomlin and Infeld highlighted the 800m, they were not the only ones to post noteworthy times in the event as senior Ashley Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) posted a BE and ECAC qualifying time with a time of 2:09.95 and junior Avril Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) followed up in fourth place (2:11.94), also with a BE and ECAC qualifying time. In the mile, senior Joanna Rodgers (Fairfax, Va./J.W. Robinson/NC State) and sophomore Lauren Gregory (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) finished first and second with times of 4:51.29 and 5:00.30, respectively - both posted BE and ECAC qualifying times. Also taking the top crown in her event was sophomore Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey [Pa.]), the lone Hoya finisher in the 500m, her first-place time qualified her for the postseason in both the BE and ECAC. In the 3000m, sophomore Marcie Sobrinski (Treichlers, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) me the BE and ECAC qualifying standard with a fourth-place time of 9:56.64. Classmate Amanda Walsh (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rohelle) finished seventh with a BE qualifying time of 10:02.85. The women's 4x400m relay team recorded an ECAC qualifying time of 3:49.95 to finish fourth in the event. In the field events, sophomore Tanore Barrow (New Haven, Conn./James HIllhouse) placed fifth in the shot put with a 13.56 mark while senior Alex Baptiste (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) recorded a 11.38 mark in the triple jump for a fifth-place finish as both qualified for the BIG EAST Championship. The Hoyas return to action on February 8-9 for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational and the Valentine Invitational, both in New York, N.Y.
