Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team sliced DePaul's nine-point lead deficit to one, 79-78 over the final four minutes but the Blue Demons were able to hang on for a 82-78 win in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday night inside McDonough Arena. The Hoyas fall to 13-12 on the season, 3-9 in league action. Georgetown had five players score in double figures for the fourth time this season with senior Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) netting 21 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. GU received a season-high 43 points from its bench players with junior transfer Karee Houlette (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs) recording career-highs with 12 points in 30 minutes. Sophomore Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton [Ill.]) finished with 14 points and six rebounds while senior guard Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) added 11 points with three treys. DePaul (18-7, 7-5 BE) senior guard Allie Quigley matched a season-high with 36 points on 15-21 shooting, including two three-pointers. Missy Mitidiero and Deirdre Naughton finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Georgetown trailed 22-8 after six-plus minutes before the Hoyas went on a 20-4 run to take a 28-27 lead with 8:11 to go in the half. The Hoyas finished the first half shooting 58 percent from the floor (14-24) and took a 40-39 lead at the break. Quigley had 19 points on 8-9 shooting for DePaul in the opening period. DePaul dictated the pace for the majority of the second half and and built a 64-54 lead with 9:32 to go on a China Threatt layup. The Hoyas trailed by six with 2:15 to go before Hoya sophomore Kenya Kirkland (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) hit two free throws after a Blue Demon intentional foul. On the ensuing GU possession, Marlow was fouled going to the basket and made two foul shots to cut the DePaul lead to 79-77 with 1:17 left.
DePaul missed a shot on its next possession. The Hoyas ran a play that ended with senior center Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal) connecting on the second of two free throws as the Hoyas climbed to within 79-78 with 28 ticks left. DePaul set up its offense and got to the free throw line where Naughton made one of two from the stripe. Georgetown came down and called a timeout, down two, 80-78 with 17 seconds to go. Quigley was able to record a steal on the inbounds pass and hit a layup to seal the win. Georgetown shot 52 percent from the floor, hitting half of its shots for the fourth time this season. The Hoyas hit the hardwood again on Saturday, February 23 at 3 p.m. against USF in a pivotal game with BIG EAST Tournament implications. |
