Hoyas Top USF, 66-56 to Improve Hopes of Getting BIG EAST Tourney Berth

Washington D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and trailed for just 33 seconds as the Hoyas toppled USF, 66-56 on Saturday afternoon in McDonough Arena. Georgetown grabbed an important victory in its quest for a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament improving to 14-12 overall, 4-9 in league action with just three games remaining.

Senior center Aminata Diop (Saint-Louis, Senegal) netted a game-high 16 points on 7-9 shooting. Diop has now scored in double figures in six straight games.

Sophomore guard Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) was terrific going for 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists vs. just two turnovers.

"We put an emphasis on getting the ball into the post and Aminata was able to convert down there," said head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "We fought and battled and matched USF's runs with scoring runs of our own. We didn't talk at all about playoff implications. We just concentrated on bouncing back from a tough loss on Wednesday (DePaul)."

Georgetown's bench outscored the USF subs 24-6 with Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and sohomore Jaleesa Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Alton [Ill.]) posted nine points apiece.

The Hoyas led 30-25 at halftime and but the Bulls could not get closer than four points the rest of the way. GU was 8-8 from the free throw line in the final 3:17 to seal the victory.

USF was led by Shantia Grace's 15 points while ChiChi Okpaleke and Melissa Dalembert who posted 11 points apiece.
 

 

Georgetown won for the first time in four tries vs USF.

The Hoyas travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the 22nd-ranked Orange on Tuesday, February 26 inside the Carrier Dome. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
