Washington, D.C. - During the Georgetown University women's basketball team's home game vs. St. John's on Wednesday, February 6, the Hoyas program will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) while joining the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in its "Think Pink" initiative in raising breast cancer awareness. Tip-off inside McDonough Arena between the Red Storm and the Hoyas is slated for 7:30 p.m. The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. More than 650 schools nationwide are participating sometime in the month of February. The Georgetown student-athletes will be wearing pink shoelaces and pink headbands during the game and pink t-shirts during warmups. February 6 also marks National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states, with community-based events, award ceremonies and other activities honoring the achievements of girls and women in sports. NGWSD is sponsored by five prominent national organizations: Girls Incorporated, Girl Scouts of the USA, National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, Women's Sports Foundation, and the YWCA of the U.S.A. In conjunction with the Georgetown-St. John's game on Wednesday, members of Georgetown University Athletics, the Lady Lawyers League, National Women's Law Center and the Washington Mystics will be present to recognize the NGWSD and their organizations. Fans coming to the game are encouraged to wear pink. Wristbands, t-shirts and posters will be among the giveaways items that will be offered. Members of the Lady Lawyers League, local AAU teams and Nova United will be taking part in a multi-generational game during halftime. Following the game, members of the Georgetown women's basketball team and the Washington Mystics will be signing autographs.
