Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (12-9, 2-6 BE) hosts St. John's (12-9, 3-5) in a pivital BIG EAST Conference tilt on Wednesday night, February 6, inside McDonough Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30. Fans are encouraged to wear pink articles of clothing as the Hoyas will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day while participating in the the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "Think Pink" initiative to raise awareness for breat cancer. Georgetown currently sits in 12th place in the BIG EAST standings, one game behind the Red Storm with eight conference game left. Hoyas in the Series vs. St. John's ... Georgetown leads the all-time series, 24-21 and GU has won 12 of the last 13 meetings with the schools. The Blue and Gray is 8-2 in its last 10 home games vs. St. John's. Fast Breaks ... -- Georgetown is coming off a 78-71 win over No. 22 Syracuse last Saturday's. It was the Hoyas' first win over a ranked opponent in four years. -- Georgetown freshman Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Acad of the Holy Cross) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after averaging a team best 17.0 points on 12-24 shooting from the floor, including 9-19 from three-point land (47%) to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals last week as GU went 1-1. She posted career-bests with 21 points and six three-pointers in her first career start at Marquette before tallying 13 points and four rebounds with three more treys in the Hoyas' 78-71 win over No. 22 Syracuse. -- Georgetown's 8-2 record at home is the best through ten home games since the 1996-97 season. -- Opponents have shot the basketball better than the Hoyas in six of the eight league games but in the two game where the Hoyas had a better field goal percentage (Seton Hall and Syracuse), the GU was victorious. Georgetown outshot Seton Hall, 46% - 36% and GU won the game, 57-56. The Hoyas also outshot the Orange, 49% - 41% to earn the seven-point win.
-- Georgetown has shot 50 percent or better in a half on 13 different occasions and finished a game shooting over 50 percent three times. The Hoyas connected on 58 percent of its second half field goals vs Syracuse on Saturday. The only other time Georgetown shot the ball better after hafltime was in the win over Brown when GU made 59 percent of its shots. Scouting St. John's ... St. John's has league wins over USF (63-51), at Seton Hall (77-71) and Marquette (77-67). It's BIG EAST losses have came at Rutgers (58-50), DePaul (91-80 [ot]), West Virginia (68-44), Pittsburgh (70-64) and at Syracuse (80-52). The guard tandem of senior Kia Wright (11.6 ppg, 4.2 apg) and junior Monique McLean (14.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) lead the Red Storm attack. SJU is 11-1 when leading at halftime. |
