Kaestner, Ford Combine for Nine Goals as Georgetown Tops Loyola, 16-9

Feb. 23, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - Sophomores Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints \Peter and Paul) and Molly Ford (Reisertown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) combined for nine goals and four assists and No. 10 Georgetown opened up a 9-1 lead at halftime en route to a 16-9 win over Loyola in the home opener for the Hoyas at the Multi-Sport Field Saturday afternoon.

It was the second-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 2-0, while the Greyhounds fall to 1-2.

"It was a great team effort today," said fourth-year head coach Ricky Fried. "I liked the way we bounced back from a tough opener on Wednesday (at GW). We rode really well which created a number of unsettled opportunities that we cashed in on. I think we showed some of the potential that this team has."

The Hoyas jumped on top with an impressive first half as the team opened up a 4-0 lead, scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the game. Using a strong transition game and speed up the field, Ford scored two goals and Kaestner added another, giving GU a 3-0 lead at 24:59. Junior Bunny O'Reilly (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) scored an unassisted goal at 16:16 to give the Hoyas a 4-0 lead.

The Greyhounds got on board at the 15:27 mark with an unassisted score from Grace Gavin, but the Hoyas responded with five more before the break, taking a 9-1 lead.

Senior Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a free-position goal, Ford tallied an unassisted goal and then recorded an assist on a goal from freshman Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) as the lead grew to 7-1. Junior Megan Bloomer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) registered an unassisted goal and Kirr assisted Ford on her fourth first half goal to give the Hoyas an eight-goal advantage at the break.

Like they did in the first half, the Hoyas came out strong in the second half, scoring four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Kaestner assisted O'Reilly on the first tally and then scored two of the next three as the lead grew to 13-1 with 20:20 to play.

Loyola's Abby Rehfuss scored at the 17:03 mark of the second half, the Greyhounds first goal in more than 27 minutes, to cut the lead to 13-2. Kirr added one more at the 13:50 mark and Kaestner scored twice more in the span of a minute as the lead increased to 16-3.

The Greyhounds scored six goals in the final 7:55 to cut the final margin to seven.

The Hoyas out-shot Loyola 31-19, limiting the Greyhounds to only four shots in the first half.

Sophomore goalie Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had six saves in goal for the Hoyas.

Georgetown hosts local rival George Mason on Wednesday, February 27 at the Multi-Sport Field. Face-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
