Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team (10-5-0, 3-4-0 BE) lost in heartbreaking fashion this afternoon on North Kehoe Field, allowing four second-half goals in a 5-3 loss to nationally-ranked West Virginia (10-4-1, 6-1-1). Leading 3-2 in the 78th minute, freshman goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) came out to challenge a WVU player in a 1v1 situation and wound up committing a foul and being issued a red card. The Mountaineers would go on to score 3 goals in the final nine minutes to secure the win. Georgetown looked to be in good shape after senior Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) scored her first two goals of 2007 and freshman Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) converted a second-half penalty kick to put GU in front, 3-1. Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest), Brittany Berry (Gaithersburg, Md./Georgetown Visitation), and Amy Speck (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) were all credited with assists. Down a goal, Zare delivered a pass to Filauro on the far right side of the pitch, which the senior crossed into the goal area. However, the cross curved to the right and caught WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler off-guard. The ball caromed off the inside left post and Georgetown found themselves all square, 1-1. The second goal came with less than a minute remaining in the first half when Speck crossed a ball in from the right side which grazed Berry's head. The minor re-direction allowed Filauro a chance to arrive on the scene and deliver a diving header to delight the Hoya faithful and put the Blue and Gray in front, 2-1. After halftime, Georgetown continued to create chances as Berry missed an opportunity by a hair, albeit from a tough angle. Senior Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) also had two great looks at goal, including a 1v1 which she put high over the goal. Finally, the Hoya persistence paid off when a cross into the box for Jordan was called a WVU foul and GU was awarded a penalty kick. That's when Wells stepped up and calmly scored to make the score, 3-1. The game started off poorly for the Hoyas when they fell behind 1-0 after Ashley Banks scored her first goal of the game after beating a GU defender on the left side off the penalty area. Trailing 3-1, WVU received a spark in the 75th minute when defender Krystle Kallman scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Banks. After DesJardin was ejected from the game, she was replaced in net by senior Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) and the Hoyas played the rest of the game with 10 players in the field. The Mountaineers pressed forward in waves and scored three goals in the final nine minutes. The equalizer was scored by Kim Bonilla and the eventual-game winner and fifth goal were both scored by Banks, giving her three on the day and 11 for the season. For the game, WVU outshot GU, 18-8. The Hoyas' next game will be on Sunday, October 21, against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. from North Kehoe Field.
