Washington, D.C. - Freshman Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and newcomer Greta Mjoll Samuelsdottir will both compete in international soccer tournaments within the next few weeks. Wells will compete with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team while Samuelsdottir will suit up for the Icelandic National Team. Wells will travel to the eastern Mediterranean for the Cyprus Women's Cup 2008, a tournament featuring five full Women's National Teams and the U.S. U-20s. It will be the second consecutive high-level competition for the U.S. U-20s, who in February won a tournament in La Serena, Chile, against the English, Norwegian and Chilean U-20 Women's National Teams. This time U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco's team will face competition against full Women's National Teams from the Netherlands and Scotland in Group 2 while the full Women's National Teams of Canada, Japan and Russia make up Group 1. The USA opens against Scotland on March 5 in Group 2 play, plays its non-tournament match against Russia on March 7, then finishes group play against the Netherlands on March 10. The U.S. U-20s are currently in preparations for qualifying for the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup to be held in Chile from Nov. 20-Dec. 7. Samuelsdottir will play for the Icelandic National Team at the Algarve Cup, which is a global invitational tournament for national teams. Held annually in the Algarve region of Portugal since 1994, it is one of the most prestigious women's football events, alongside the Women's World Cup and Women's Olympic Soccer. Currently, 12 teams are invited, with the top eight competing for the championship. The teams are divided into three groups of four -- A, B and C. Group C was added in 2002 to provide second-tier teams with high-level match experience every year. The current holder is the United States. Iceland will square-off against Poland on March 5, Republic of Ireland on March 7 and Portugal on March 9 in Group C
