Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team (13-5-0, 6-4-0 BIG EAST) plays their final regular season game of the season on Sunday, October 28 against Louisville (11-4-2, 6-3-1 BE). This game will decide second place in the National Division of the BIG EAST, and with it, a home game in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Hoyas will also be recognizing the accomplishments of their eight graduating seniors; Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead), Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross), Kirsten Odermann (Portland, Ore./Sunset), Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), Sarah Fetters (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), Lindsey Appezzato (Davis, Calif./Davis), Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Vanessa Joyce (Santa Clara, Calif./Archbishop Mitty). The game will start at 1 p.m. on North Kehoe Field. Appezzato came to Georgetown from Davis, California where she was a two-time team MVP and first-team All-CIF selection in 2003 and 2004. After transferring from UCLA, Appezzato started every game for the Hoyas in 2005 and was selected to the 2005 Delaware Blue Hen Adidas Classic All-Tournament Team. This season, she scored her first goal as a Hoya in a 5-0 win against George Washington.
Fetters came to Georgetown from Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she was a Sun-Sentinel first-team all-county selection and state all-star while captaining her club team, the Coral Springs Storm to state titles in 2000-01. Last season Fetters tied for third on the team in goals and scored the game-winner against local rival American University. This season she has three goals, all game-winners, against Manhattan, Stony Brook and Seton Hall Filauro came to Georgetown from Denville, N.J. where she garnered all-county, all-conference, and all-state awards while serving as captain of her high school team. In her sophomore season, she finished second on the team in goals and tied for third in points while delivering Georgetown its first BIG EAST Championship win with a goal in the 38th minute in 1-0 victory at Syracuse. Last season Elaina finished second on the team in goals and points while scoring the game-winning goal against preseason conference favorite Connecticut. This season, Filauro has four goals and currently ranks in the top-10 all-time with 15 for her career Higgins came to Georgetown from Island Park, N.Y. where she was a captain of both her high school and club teams and named to the all-county and all-state teams in 2002. She tallied six shutouts in her rookie season, and ranked third in BIG EAST conference games with five shutouts. Her sophomore year, Higgins tied the school record for single-season shutouts with seven and set the Georgetown record for career shutouts with 13. Last season, Higgins set the all-time saves record at Georgetown in the final game of the year, and she will graduate as Georgetown's all-time leader in saves (235) and shutouts (19). Jordan came to Georgetown from Indianapolis, Ind. where she was selected to the all-state and all-county teams and was a NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-American. During her freshman campaign, Jordan finished second on the team in scoring (7), assists (6), and points (20), all three totals rank among the top-10 for a single season. Two years ago, she finished tied for third on the team with 13 points on three goals and a team-best seven assists, good for ninth in the BIG EAST. This season, Jordan leads the team in goals and is tied for second in assists and points and will graduate among the top-10 all-time at GU in all three categories. Joyce came to Georgetown from Santa Clara, Calif. where she was a first-team all-league selection and team Most Valuable Player in 2002. Joyce picked up the first two points of her Georgetown career this season with assists in wins over Stony Brook and St. Joseph's (Pa.). She will be a part of the two stingiest defenses in Hoya history as last year's team set a school record by allowing only 20 goals in a season. However, this year's team is on pace to break that record as they enter having only allowed 18 goals. Odermann came to Georgetown from Portland, Ore. where she was a First-team all-league selection in 2002 and 2003 and was named the Metro League Player of the Year in 2003. "Kirsten has been very unlucky with injuries in her career," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "Yet somehow she always finds the courage and dignity to handle everything that comes her way. As a result she gained the respect and admiration of her teammates and is huge positive life force on our team. She has a strong role within our team this year" Waskewich came to Georgetown from Laytonsville, Md. where she was a three-time WCAC all-conference team and four-time All-Met team. As a freshman she tallied five assists, third on the team and one goal for seven points and was awarded a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week. As a sophomore, she totaled six points, best on the team for a defender and last year led the team with five assists, finishing third on the team in points with seven. She will graduate among the top-10 all-time in assists while being a stalwart on the defensive end of the field. |
