Nov. 12, 2007
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team sat and waited....and waited.....and waited. Finally, the last four-team pod was revealed and nervousness gave way to hysteria. The Hoyas (14-7-0) now know their destiny and will travel to Charlottesville, Va. for a NCAA First Round contest against the Colonial Athletic Association's regular-season champion, William & Mary (14-4-2). The game will be played on Friday, November 16 from Klöckner Stadium at 7:30 p.m. This marks the first time a Georgetown women's soccer team has made the NCAA Tournament. In the midst of their best season ever, the Hoyas are led offensively by freshman midfielder Ingrid Wells, the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-BIG EAST selection. She is currently ranked fifth nationally in assists per game, averaging 0.65 per contest. This year, Wells has dished out 13 assists, which ties her with Nicole DePalma for the GU single-season record. DePalma set the record in 2002, the same year she also set the single-game record with five assists against Howard. In a 5-0 win over Cincinnati, Wells recorded a season-high four assists. The freshman has 25 points during 2007 leaving her one point behind the single-season record of 26, set by Jessie Beers-Altman in 2002. Wells is not a one-person show though as Sara Jordan, a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, is tied for the team lead in goals with six, Stephanie Zare and Toni Marie Hudson have five and Caitlin Durkee and Elaina Filauro have four. Jordan and Zare are each tied for second on the team this season with five assists apiece and Jordan, Zare and Hudson all have double-digit points.
Goalkeepers Jackie DesJardin and Jade Higgins have combined this season for a school-record 10 shutouts and a 1.00 goals-against average. Solid defensive play has been a constant this season with BIG EAST All-Tournament Team selection Karen Waskewich, Michaela Buonomo, Nicole Smith and Vanessa Joyce appearing in every game and Alex Gargano starting in the last 10 contests. In the last five games, the Hoyas have allowed only three goals against USF, Cincinnati, and three programs ranked in the top-35 by the NSCAA (Louisville, Connecticut and Notre Dame). The other game in Charlottesville, Va. will feature the host, fourth-seeded Virginia, against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference representative, Loyola (Md.) That game will kick-off at 5 p.m. |
