Georgetown Women's Soccer Readies For William & Mary in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Nov. 15, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team travels to Charlottesville, Va. for the First and Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas (14-7-0) will play the Colonial Athletic Association regular season champions, William & Mary (14-4-2), on Friday at 7:30 p.m. from Klockner Stadium on the UVA campus. This marks the first trip ever for GU to the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the game between the Hoyas and Tribe will either play fourth-seeded Virginia or Metro Atlantic Athletic Champion Loyola (Md.) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

In the midst of their best season in program history, the Hoyas are led offensively by freshman midfielder Ingrid Wells, the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-BIG EAST selection. She is currently ranked fifth nationally in assists per game, averaging 0.65 per contest. This year, Wells has dished out 13 assists, which ties her with Nicole DePalma for the GU single-season record. DePalma set the record in 2002, the same year she also set the single-game record with five assists against Howard. In a 5-0 win over Cincinnati, Wells recorded a season-high four assists. The freshman has 25 points during 2007 leaving her one point behind the single-season record of 26, set by Jessie Beers-Altman in 2002.

Wells is not a one-person show though as Sara Jordan, a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, is tied for the team lead in goals with six, Stephanie Zare and Toni Marie Hudson have five and Caitlin Durkee and Elaina Filauro have four. Jordan and Zare are each tied for second on the team this season with five assists apiece and Jordan, Zare and Hudson all have double-digit points.

Goalkeepers Jackie DesJardin and Jade Higgins have combined this season for a school-record 10 shutouts and a 1.00 goals-against average. Solid defensive play has been a constant this season with BIG EAST All-Tournament Team selection Karen Waskewich, Michaela Buonomo, Nicole Smith and Vanessa Joyce appearing in every game and Alex Gargano starting in the last 10 contests. In the last five games, the Hoyas have allowed only three goals against USF, Cincinnati, and three programs ranked in the top-35 by the NSCAA (Louisville, Connecticut and Notre Dame).

William & Mary was upset in the CAA Tournament semifinals by Virginia Commonwealth after the teams played to a scoreless tie, and the Rams won via penalty-kicks. The Tribe played an arduous non-conference schedule and earned a 3-0 win over N.C. State, a 1-0 win over then-No. 2 North Carolina and dropped a tough 1-0, double-overtime contest at then-No. 4 Virginia. William and Mary holds a 5-0-0 advantage all-time against Georgetown, with the team's last meeting being in 2004. GU has never even scored a goal against the Tribe, having been out-scored 15-0 during the team's five contests.

Claire Zimmeck leads the team in goals (16) and points (32) and is tied for ninth in the nation averaging 0.8 goals-per-game. Emily Kittleson is second on the team in assists and points, while being tied for second in goals and Meredith Brown leads the team with six helpers this season. The W&M defense has only allowed nine goals all season and has 13 team shutouts with goalkeeper Meghan Walker owning 10 of them. Walker is also currently seventh in the nation with a 0.45 goals-against average.

This season's NCAA bid marks the 15th time in the last 16 years that the Tribe has earned an invitation to the tournament. Additionally, it is the 22nd time in the program's history that it has garnered a spot in NCAA postseason play.
