March 6, 2008 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Georgetown University softball team (6-15) was unable to keep pace with New Mexico State's offense, as the Aggies shutout the Hoyas, 8-0 in game one, before winning the second game 9-1 on Wednesday evening in Las Cruces, N.M. Over two games, the Hoyas offense was only able to produce eight hits, while stranding 12 runners. In game one, the Aggies got off to a quick start, as Kandis Jones hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the first inning, then scored when Stacey Lien reached base safely on an error. Kristi Randall drove in a run and scored a run in a three-run second inning, extending the Aggies lead to 4-0 and putting the Hoyas in a deep hole early. GU was not able to climb back into the game, stranding a total of seven baserunners, including two each in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned on ten hits, over 5.0 innings. The Aggies picked up where they left off from game one to game two, pinning five runs on freshman Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington). Kristi Randall hit a three-run homer and Ashley Maroda hit a two run shot, to give New Mexico State an insurmountable, 5-0 lead after the first inning. Freshman Aimee Moffat (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) led off the top of the second inning with a single and later came around to score on sophomore Jadig Garcia's (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) single, to put the Hoyas on the board. But the Aggies tacked on two runs in each the second and third innings to down GU, 9-1, sweeping the doubleheader.
Conners took the loss, allowing five runs on two hits, not making it out of the first inning. |
