WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (7-21) allowed three seventh inning runs, all courtesy of a three-run homer from Seton Hall catcher Kealan Waldron, as the Pirates came back to defeat the Hoyas, 3-1 during the first day of the Hoya Invitational at Guy Mason Field. Sophomore Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) held a two-hit shutout into the top of the seventh inning, when the Pirates bats awoke. Ashley Constantini and Jenna Best hit back-to-back singles and Waldron followed with a three-run shot over the centerfield wall to give Seton Hall a 3-1 lead and the eventual victory. Connell took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits, over 7.0 innings. Ashley Forsyth earned the victory for Seton Hall, allowing one run, unearned, over 7.0 innings. With two-runners on in the top of the third inning, the Pirates were on the verge of breaking the game when Connell got Shannon Pease to foul out to the catcher Suria Bahadue. Sophomore shortstop Samantha Peters made run-saving, diving catch on a would-be base hit, off the bat of Amanda Winn to keep the Seton Hall scoreless. Top of the fifth inning junior Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) got the Hoyas started with a one-out double, before freshman McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) doubled. Freshman Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Hemet), who had come on as a pinch-hitter, reached on a error, as Gallinari crossed the plate, to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
GU could not make the lead stand as the Pirates rode a three-run seventh to a victory. |
