Georgetown Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From George Washington To Win Team-Record Fourth Straight

March 26, 2008

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (15-23) swept both games of its doubleheader with George Washington (5-12) in close fashion, winning 3-2 and 11-10 on Wednesday at Guy Mason Field.

Sophomore Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) tossed 7.0 strong innings in the first game, allowing just two runs and four hits. Connell also earned the win in the second game, her fourth in two days, allowing five runs, four earned in 4.1 innings.

Sophomore Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) led the Hoyas offense in the first game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. In the second game junior Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School), sophomore Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Harris) and freshmen McKinley Cooper (Langley, Va./McLean) and Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Hemet) each had three hits, while freshman Aimee Moffat (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the first game, the Hoyas did all of their scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Bahadue drove in a run and scored and sophomore Olivia Newhouse (Weston, Conn./Green Farms Academy) drove in run, giving the GU a 3-0 cushion.

GW answered back, scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning, but Connell struck out Amanda Gabriel to strand the bases loaded. Connell then retired nine of the next 10 batters to lead the blue and gray to a 3-2 victory.

Both offenses came to life in game two, as the Colonials got on board against freshman Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) in the top of the first inning. GU would answer in the bottom of the inning, as Peters hit a two-run triple. Freshman Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Hemet) and junior Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) also drove in runs in the bottom of the first to give the Hoyas a 4-1 advantage.

Carrie Higdon drove in two runs for GW in the top of the second and they would get two more in the top of the third to take a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) led off the top of the fourth inning with a home run, before Peters hit a two-run shot of her own later in the inning to give GU a 7-5 edge.

After the Colonials cut the lead to one run, Georgetown added insurance in the bottom of the sixth, as junior Kat Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) scored on a passed ball and senior Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) singled to drive in another. Cooper doubled to drive in Sonnichsen to give the Hoyas a seemingly insurmountable 10-6 lead.

But the Colonials had other ideas. With the bases loaded, Chrysanthi Halkiotis hit a deep blast over the centerfield wall off Connell to tie the score at 10 runs apiece. The Hoyas were able to respond in the bottom of the seventh, as Peters led off with a double, then scored on Moffat's walk-off hit, to take the victory, 11-10.
