STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Georgetown University softball team (17-24) defeated Mississippi Valley State for the second time in two days, as freshman Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) held the Delta Devils to one run, in the Hoyas 5-1 victory. Conners earned her fourth collegiate victory, allowing one run on nine hits over 7.0 innings. Conners held MSVU scoreless until the sixth inning. Sophomore Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill), who was named to the Bully Bash All-Tournament Team, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and freshman McKinley Cooper (Langley, Va./McLean) went 2-for-3 with two runs. GU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Cooper and Peters led-off with back-to-back singles. Freshman Aimee Moffat's (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt, before sophomore Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) singled allowing both runs to score. Freshman Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Calif.) followed with a single to score Bahadue, giving Georgetown a 3-0 lead. The blue and gray added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cooper reached on a two-out double and scored on Peters' single to left field. Peters would later score on Moffat's single to left field, giving the Hoyas a 5-0 lead.
The Delta Devils scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, but that would be all the offense they would manage on an afternoon where they stranded nine runners. |
