Georgetown Softball Swept on Senior Day by Marshall, 12-7, 13-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (21-35) was unable to silence the bats of Marshall University (26-28), as the Thundering Herd swept the doubleheader, 12-7, 12-0 (5) during Senior Day at Guy Mason Field on Saturday afternoon. Georgetown falls to 0-4 all-time against the Conference USA squad.

Sophomore Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) went 3-for-4 in the first game with a home run and a double. The double was her 21 st of the season, adding to a total that had her tied for second in NCAA Division I.

In game one Marshall got off to a quick start, as Dee Toureville hit a solo home run over the center field wall to give the Thundering Herd a quick, 1-0 lead. Marshall would get

Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) deposited Caitlyn Jackson's 2-1 offering over the centerfield wall, a three-run home run, her fifth of the season, to catapult the Hoyas in front, 3-2.

In the top of the third, Toureville would even the score, hitting Connell's second pitch over the centerfield wall, tying the score at three runs apiece. With two outs and the bases loaded Rachel Schmidt singled to centerfield to drive in two runs to put the Thundering Herd in front, 5-3.

Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) led off the bottom of the third with a double to deep left field and scored on Jillian Webb's (Hemet, Calif./Hemet) single over the head of the shortstop, closing the gap to a run, 5-4.

Marshall pulled away in the top of the fourth inning, as Rachel Sofie scored on a sacrifice fly and Caitlyn Jackson hit a solo home run and the Thundering Herd continued to build on their lead to complete a 12-7 victory.

Sophomore Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) took the loss allowing 12 runs, nine earned over 7.0 innings to fall to 14-24.
 

 

In game two, Marshall struck quickly, scoring five runs on just three hits, while bringing eight batters to the plate against freshman Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington).

The Thundering Herd added three more runs in the top of the second inning, four more in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning to earn a 13-0 victory in five innings. Conners (7-11) took the loss, allowing

NOTES: Prior to the day's action, senior captain Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Rosemary Choate Hall) and Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./Lawrenceville School) the team's captain in 2006 and 2007 were honored in an on-field ceremony. Sonnichsen a pre-dental student will be headed to University of Connecticut Dental School in the fall, while Lang, who graduated in December with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Anthropology and American Musical Culture now teaches and coaches softball at Sidwell Friends.
