WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's tennis team (7-13) concluded its regular season by defeating visiting Howard University, 6-1 at the McDonough Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon, a day after finding out they had been invited to the BIG EAST Conference Tournament for the first time since 2000. Seniors Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) and Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) earned victories in singles and doubles play in their last career match at McDonough Tennis Complex, while freshman Alex Sebia extended her winning streak in singles play to seven, winning the first set 6-2, before opponent Laura Marin retired down 4-1 in the second set. GU took control of the match early, sweeping doubles play, as seniors Cohen and Winokur and freshmen Sebia and Elizabeth Sullivan (Potomac, Md./National Cathedral School) each notched 8-2 victories. Freshman Caroline Kuehn (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and junior Courtney Olsen (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy) won the third doubles match, 8-3. In singles play, the Hoyas cruised to victory in the top three spots. Cohen defeated Aja Wright, 6-3, 6-2 in the top spot, while Olsen and Winokur cruised to straight set wins in the second and third spots respectively. Kuehn did not give up a game, defeating Whitney Ambush, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 match, while Sebia picked up her seventh straight win at No. 5. The Hoyas will travel to Tampa, Fla. on Wednesday for the BIG EAST Conference Women's Tennis Tournament. They will begin play on Thursday at noon when they take on the DePaul Blue Demons.
