Washington, D.C. - At the conclusion of the two-day Larry Ellis Invitational held in Princeton, N.J. the Georgetown University track & field team had much to smile about. A more than successful first day saw the Hoyas post seven NCAA Regional qualifying times and two Hoyas put up the second- and third-best times in the country. Upon completion of events, the Blue & Gray were also able to boast two new school records and a handful of postseason qualifying times. Freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) set a new school record in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 14.19 while the 4x100m relay squad set a new school record with a time of 40.91. The 4x100m relay squad made up of Kinney, junior Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Weber) and freshmen Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) and Spenser Carter (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) posted a time of 40.91 to break the previous school record of 41.39, previously set at the 2000 IC4A Championships. The time also qualified the quartet for the IC4A Championship. Kinney's performance in the 110m high hurdles broke a school record set by teammate Terrell Gissendanner (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) at the 2006 Georgia Tech Invitational (14.23). It was also an NCAA Regional qualifying time. Carter also competed in the 200m and finished with a time of 21.48 to qualify for the BE and IC4A Championships. He then competed in the 100m and posted another BE and IC4A time of 10.56 as Mitchell followed up with his time of 10.59, also qualifying for both postseason events. Sophomore Ian Conyers (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) ran the event and timed in at 10.93 to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships.
Freshman Toby Ulm (Marlborough, U.K./St. John's School and Community College) competed in the 400m hurdles and posted a BE and IC4A qualifying time of 53.38. Classmate Suber ran to a BIG EAST time of 49.66 in the 400m to add a second postseason time to his weekend repertoire. The 4x400m relay squad of sophomores Danny Harris (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Kelvin Hill (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel), Suber and Carter finished the event with a time of 3:18.69. Senior Alex Baptiste (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) won the women's triple jump with her mark of 12.13m, also qualifying her for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. The women's 4x100m relay squad made up of sophomores Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northampton) and Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey [Pa.}) and freshmen Deidra Sanders (Memphis, Tenn./Eastern) and Kyla Cook (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) recorded a time of 47.88. Wernik added another postseason time when she ran the 200m in 24.61 to qualify for the BE and ECAC Championships. Johnson's time of 55.42 in the 400m qualified her for the BE and ECAC Championships also. Finally, the women's 4x400 squad consisting of Wernik, Johnson, Baptiste and senior Ashley Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) ran an ECAC qualifying time of 3:45.31. Sophomore Tanore Barrow (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) posted a BIG EAST qualifying mark in the shot put as she recorded a score of 13.01m for sixth place. On the west coast, competing at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. junior Levi Miller (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) ran to a ninth-place finish in the 5000m with a time of 13:57.63, a time that qualified him for the NCAA Regional. Also running in the 5000m, junior Michael Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) finished with a time of 14:32.90 to qualify for the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships. Assistant Coach and former Georgetown student-athlete Rod Koborsi competed in the men's 5000m invitational at the Mt. SAC Relays and finished sixth with a time of 13:30.65. |
