Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team ended a four-match homestand with a 3-0 loss to BIG EAST Conference foe South Florida this afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas are now 5-19 overall on the season with a 1-7 mark in conference play. The Bulls improve to 13-6 and 5-3 in league action. Game scores were 19-30, 24-30, 20-30. Freshman Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led the team with six kills on 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. Junior Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) dished out 15 assists and sophomores Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and Dana Dumas (Nokomis, Fla./Pine View) pitched in five kills apiece. The first game saw inconsistent play from the Hoyas as a negative hitting percentage gave the Bulls nearly half of their first points in the first game. A seven-point run behind the serve of USF's Marcela Gurgel converted a four-point Hoya lead to a three-point advantage for the Bulls. A five-point run extended the Bull lead to 19-14 and the Bulls picked up 11 of the next 16 points to win the game. Georgetown battled in the second game and even led by as many as three points (10-7) on a kill from Dumas that prompted a USF timeout. South Florida picked up 10 of the next 14 points to take a lead in game two that they would not relinquish. Georgetown kept it close but back-to-back wayward plays ended game two. The Blue and Gray stayed close in the third game until USF's Gurgel was on serve, winning three-consecutive points. South Florida picked up five of the next seven points prompting a GU timeout as the Hoyas trailed, 15-8l The lead proved to be too much for the Hoyas to recover from and the Bulls set up match point with a kill from Nakia Williams off the bench and capitalized on a GU error to win the match.
Georgetown hits the road for its next four matches. A four-contest BIG EAST road swing begins on Saturday, October 27 when they travel to South Orange, N.J. for a 1 p.m. match at Seton Hall. |
