Perez Leads Track and Field on Day Two of Houston Invitational

HOUSTON -- Jason Perez's impressive clocking in the 400-meter hurdles helped him crack the Top-10 in the nation, as he led the University of Houston track and field team through the final day of competition in the Houston Invitational at the Tellez/Lewis Track Complex.

Perez won the 400-meter hurdles competition with a personal-record time of 50.62. His time improved upon his own Conference USA leading regional mark. It currently ranks fourth in the Midwest Region and is the eighth-fastest time posted in the country this year.

Tremaine Smith set a regional qualifying mark with a time of 10.48 in the men's 100-meter dash. Smith later improved upon his regional mark in the 200-meters with a time of 20.98, currently the ninth-best in the Midwest Region and tied for 29th in the nation this year.

Kalyn Floyd also set a regional mark in the 200-meters, posting a clocking of 23.88. Floyd's time is currently fourth in the C-USA.

Seun Adigun improved her regional mark in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.52. Adigun's mark currently stands in fourth in the Midwest Region and 28th in the NCAA this season. Brittani Mason also competed and finished with a time of 14.83.

A pair of freshmen jumpers had a huge day for the Cougars, snatching wins in the long jump and triple jump.

In the long jump, Ed Turner won the collegiate competition, setting a regional mark with a personal-long of 7.53m (24-08.50). The mark is currently second in C-USA, fifth in the Midwest Region and 36th in the nation.

Chris Carter finished in first in the triple jump, setting a regional mark with a season-best of 15.43m (50-07.50). Carter's leap is tops in Conference USA and ninth in the Midwest Region along as 35th in the nation.

In other field events, Ashley Bryant won the women's discus throw with a regional qualifying mark of 51.49m (168-11) - the third best in Conference USA. Charlissa Foster also competed finishing third with a mark of 47.15m (154-08), season-best.

Carey LaCour made his return to action after recovering from injury. He finished 14th in the men's 400-meters with a time of 48.45. His time is currently in the Top 10 in Conference. Also running for Houston was Dominic Milton with a time of 50.20.

Tyrone Carrier also posted a notable time in the 200-meters. Carrier posted a season-best clocking of 21.02, missing the regional mark by one hundredth of a second. His time currently is tenth in the Midwest Region. Carrier also set a season-best in the 100m with a time of 10.58

Darryl Cloud set a personal-best 52.95 in the 400-meter hurdles, and currently owns the second-fastest mark in C-USA this year.

Steven Jones posted a time of 14.65 in the 110-meter hurdles. Cloud also competed in the event, finishing with a season-best time of 15.00.

In relay action, the women's 4X100-meter relay team set a regional mark with a clocking of 45.13. Their time is currently second in Conference. The men's 4X100 team took first with a time of 40.57, while the 4X400 team finished in fifth in a highly competitive field with a time of 3:15.32.

Brandon Hubbard finished sixth in the discus with a mark of 50.10m (164-04). Sidney Flores finished ninth place with a personal-best throw of 47.21m (154-11), while John Patterson also set a new personal record with a mark of 44.99m (147-07).

Brittani Mason ran the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 1:04.03, to finish in ninth.

In the high jump, Thomas Lang tied for sixth place, clearing 1.95m (6-04.75), tying his personal best in the event. For the women, Laura Allredy finished tied for sixth with a clearance of 1.65m (5-00.50).

Also competing in the jumps for Houston was Grant Hightower, who leapt 7.21m (23-08.00) to finish sixth in the long jump. Jeremy Kelly cleared 14.33m (47-00.25) to finish seventh in the triple jump.

In the hammer throw, William Krokey finished in fourth-place with a season-best mark of 54.39m (178-05), currently fourth in Conference USA this year. Hubbard finished fifth with a mark of 53.12m (174-03), currently fifth in Conference USA .

Quin'shundolyn McPherson ran a time of 55.76, finishing eighth in the 400-meter dash. Candyce Cross took 12th with a time of 56.78 and LaNeeka Allen rounded out the field for the Cougars with a mark of 57.41.

Adriane Guinn finished with a mark of 2:14.89 to place third in the women's 800-meters.

Jasmine Trier won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 12.32.02 and Oumama Hallal won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:33.79

McPherson posted a mark of 5.80m (19-00.50) in the long jump, while Caresir Hamilton won the collegiate competition in the triple jump with a mark of 12.17m (39-11.25).

UP NEXT

The Cougars will begin preparations for the upcoming Conference USA Outdoor Championships in El Paso. The three-day meet will be held May 15-17.
