Track and Field Pulls Double-Duty Competing in Two Meets This Weekend

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston track and field team will pull double-duty this weekend, as they split to compete in the UH All-Comers Meet inside Yeoman Field House Saturday and the two-day Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. This will mark the last time the Cougars will compete on their home track before the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb 29-March1. The non-scoring meet is to begin at 9 am with the field events, beginning with the men's and women's long jump. Running events are slated to start at 11 am with the distance medley relays followed by the 60m hurdles. Admission for the meet is $5. Schools competing in the UH All-Comers meet include Texas-Arlington, Grambling, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Southern, Houston Baptist, Texas A&M, Prairie View, Texas-San Antonio, Sam Houston State, McNeese State, Jackson State, Rice, Southern and Jackson State among others. The two-day meet will begin Friday with the men's pole vault and the women's 5000-meter run at 9 am. The meet will continue on Saturday beginning with the high jump and the women's 3000-meter run at 10 am. The final event - the men's 4x400-meter relay - is slated to begin at 5:30 pm. More than 88 teams will compete in the Tyson Invitational, combining to form one of the deepest fields in the country. Scheduled to participate are Air Force, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Central Florida, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, Southern California, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest among others. LAST TIME OUT Freshman Kalyn Floyd, younger sister of former UH standout Ebonie Floyd, made her collegiate debut and took second in the women's 400-meter dash with a clocking of 57.65 to lead the University of Houston track and field team during the Bayou City Championships. Joining Floyd was senior sprinter Tremaine Smith, who finished fourth in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83. Smith now currently holds the two fastest times in that event in Conference USA this season with a best of 6.80. In the women's 60-meter dash, junior Sean Adigun took second with a time of 7.60. Freshman Christi Jones grabbed fourth place, posting a 7.63 finish. Junior Dayo Ogunniyi improved her personal best in the event with a running of 7.76 in the prelims UP NEXT The Cougars will prepare for the C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 29-March 1, which UH will host inside Yeoman Field House. |
