Track and Field Prepares to Host C-USA Indoor Championships

HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team will play host to the 2008 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Yeoman Field Houston on Feb. 29 and March 1. This is the seventh-straight year the Cougars will host the annual meet and the ninth time in the last 12 seasons. During that span, the Cougars have combined to win seven team championships, finishing second once. Houston also hosted the championships in 1999 and 2001 with both the men's and women's teams finishing in the top-three each year. Throughout the 11 years of the conference neither team has finished lower than third place at the meet. The two-day meet is scheduled to start at 9 am, Friday with the beginning of the men's heptathlon competition. Field events are slated to start at 1 pm with the women's weight throw. Running events will begin at 5 pm with the women's 5000-meter run. Competition will continue through Saturday, starting at 9 am with the final three events of the men's heptathlon. Women's shot put will lead off the field events at 11 am, and the running events will pick back up at 1 pm with the women's mile. The Houston track and field team has posted two NCAA provisional qualification marks this year and enters the competition with seven Cougars currently holding the best mark in C-USA action. Senior Ivan Diggs (high jump) and Junior Seun Adigun (60m hurdles) have both provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In addition, senior Tremaine Smith has posted the fastest time in C-USA in both the 60-meters (6.80) and the 200-meters (21.41). Freshman Thomas Lang currently holds the top mark in the 60-meter hurdles with a clocking of 8.14. In the field events, Diggs' clearance of 2.22m (7-03.75) is tops in C-USA, while freshman Ed Turner's leap of 7.41m (24-03.75) is best in the long jump.
