Women's Basketball Runs Streak To Six, Beats Memphis 70-54

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Houston women's basketball team started the game on an 11-0 run and won its sixth-straight game, a 70-54 decision over Memphis, Friday in Conference USA action at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Houston (12-9, 6-1 C-USA) made its first seven shots and outrebounded Memphis by a 53-25 margin. Memphis (5-15, 2-5 C-USA) dropped its third straight and has lost five in-a-row to the Cougars. The six-game streak is the longest for UH since the 2004-05 Cougars opened the season with 10-consecutive wins. Twiggy McIntyre (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Kansas State) scored a game-high 22 points including six three-pointers. The six triples ties a C-USA single-game high this season. She was 6-for-9 from behind the arc and also added four rebounds and four assists. Courtney Taylor (Crockett, Texas/Crockett HS) scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds for he sixth double-double of the season. Memphis had only 25 rebounds as a team and Houston soundly won the rebounding battle 53-25. Thirty-two of UH's 70 points came in the paint. The Cougars turned an 11-point halftime lead into a 49-33 advantage with 15:49 left. Memphis used a 16-6 run, keyed by three triples from Jessica Hall, to pull within six at 55-49 with 7:20 left. A 7-0 Houston run, with five points coming from Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) moved the lead back to double digits for good at 62-49 with 5:24 left. Jackson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. UH ran the lead to as many as 18 and held Memphis without a field goal for the final 7:59 of the game. Cobilyn Hill (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) was the fourth UH player to find double digits. She had 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. After knocking down seven-straight shots, UH led 23-11 five minutes into the game. The Cougars hit only 16 points for the final 15 minutes including three field-goal droughts of four minutes. UH was 7-for-9 from the charity stripe and got five three-pointers from McIntyre. Hall led Memphis with 20 points after knocking down four triples in the game. Alex Winchell added 11 along with four assists. Houston closes out a three-game road swing at UAB Sunday. The Cougars and Blazers square off in a battle for second place in the league standings at 2 p.m. CST in Bartow Arena.
