April 6, 2008
Orlando, Fla.-- The University of Houston softball team fell to Conference USA rival UCF 6-4 Sunday in game two of the series. The third game was cancelled due to rain. No. 9 softball is now 32-5 overall and 10-1 in C-USA. The loss snapped the Cougars' 10-game winning streak in conference play. The Knights took an early lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning and one run in the bottom of the third from a solo home run by Allison Kime. UCF had three hits and four RBIs, while freshman Baillie Lott walked two to give the Knights an early 5-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Angel Shamblin came in to pitch with two outs to end the inning. The Cougars slashed the Knight's lead to just 5-3 when junior Christa Raley doubled down the left field line and scored after junior Jessica Valis double to left field. Junior Katie Bush singled to advance Jessica Valis to third, and junior Elaina Nordstrom had a ground out RBI to score Jessica Valis. Freshman Jennifer Klinkert reached base on a throwing error, while Bush scored. The Cougars continued to fight back in the sixth. Shamblin doubled to left center and advanced to third from a SAC fly by junior Haley Valis. Raley flied out to center to score Shamblin. After leaving two runners on, Nordstrom grounded out to the shortstop. That would be the last run the Cougars scored, and not enough to give Houston the win. Lott gave up five runs, three hits and walked two. Shamblin gave up one run, three hits and struck out seven. Houston will return home for a single game against the USA Olympic Team on April 8 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park. The Cougars will then host Texas- San Antonio in a double-header on April 9 at 4 p.m. They will return to conference action with a series against ECU on April 12-13 at Cougar Softball Stadium.
