HOUSTON -- The University of Houston softball team swept its third Conference USA series this season with a 7-0 win over ECU on Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium. With the win they move to 37-5 overall this season and 13-1 in C-USA. After retiring the first three batters in the first inning, ECU pitcher Brooke Swann gave up two straight hits in the second inning. Freshman Jennifer Klinkert recorded a single to center field and junior Laurie Wagner followed that up with her 12th home run this season to give Houston the early 2-0 lead. Wagner continues to move up the single-season home run chart this year. The 12 home runs she has recorded this season are third most all-time in a single season. She needs 17 to tie Kristen Glowacz (2002) for the single-season record. With the bases loaded in the third inning, UH put up one run in the inning when Klinkert walked in junior Jessica Valis. Houston notched six walks in the game, which ties for a season high. The fourth inning proved to be the most productive for the Cougars. Houston put up three runs in the inning behind six hits. Junior Haley Valis opened the inning with a single to left field before freshman Casey Willow grounded out to third base. Haley Valis scored on the next play when junior Christa Raley hit a single to center field. UH then recorded four-straight singles before Wagner grounded out to the pitcher to close out the inning. Senior Amanda Grote gave Houston their final margin of victory, scoring on a single by Raley in the fifth inning. Grote opened the inning with a single to reach base. The Cougars registered 14 hits in the game, one shy of tying their season best of 15 hits that they had against Marshall on March 15. Senior Angel Shamblin pitched six innings, allowing one hit, no runs and four strikeouts. She moves to 22-2 this season. Freshman Baillie Lott entered the game in the seventh inning to close out the game. The Cougars are now 18-2 in shutout games this season. Houston will next host Baylor on April 16 in a double-header set to begin at 3pm. Following the mid-week game, the Cougars will be on the road for two straight C-USA series at Tulsa (April 19-20) and UAB April 26-27).
