HOUSTON -- The University of Houston softball team defeated Sam Houston State, 10-2, Wednesday at Cougar Softball Stadium. The win improves the Cougars to 41-7 overall this season.

Junior Haley Valis hit a three-run home run in the third inning to pace the Cougars. The home run gives her eight for the season. With the home run she scored junior Laurie Wagner who reached on a fielder's choice and senior Amanda Grote who reached on a single.

The Cougars would go on to add three more runs in the inning, including two runs from freshman Baillie Lott and junior Christa Raley who reached base on back-to-back singles.

Lott pitched the complete game moving to 7-3 in the circle. She gave up two runs on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. She gave up one home run by Sam Houston State's Hailey Wiginton in the fifth inning.

Junior Jessica Valis led-off with a single to start the game, eventually scoring on a single to shortstop from freshman Jennifer Klinkert.

Lott also recorded an RBI double in the second inning. She would go on to score after a single through the middle by Jessica Valis.

The final run of the game came in the fifth inning when Jessica Valis hit her third single of the night scoring freshman Angela Spittler.

Houston will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a three-game Conference USA series against UAB on April 26-27. The first game of the series will begin at 1pm on Saturday with the final game on Sunday at 1pm.
