HOUSTON -- Junior Laurie Wagner hit her 17th home run of the season to lead the Cougar softball team to a 5-0 win over UTEP in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Houston took the second game of the day 1-0 to improve to 20-2 in Conference USA and 47-8 overall. With the two wins, the Cougars tied a program record for conference wins, matching Houston's 2007 win total. Wagner hit the three-run home run on the first pitch in the first inning, giving her a total of 17 for the season. She has now tied for the single season record home runs with Kristen Glowacz who had 17 during the 2005 season. Houston added two runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Baillie Lott scored on a walk by freshman Jennifer Klinkert with the bases loaded and junior Katie Bush scored the final run of the game after Wagner was hit by a pitch. In her final regular season game at Cougar Softball Stadium, senior Angel Shamblin moved to 29-2 in the circle. She had 12 strikeouts for her second straight double-digit strikeout game and her fourth in the last five. Shamblin, Amanda Grote, Barbie Love and Courtney Spittler were honored prior to the start of the second game as part of the senior day festivities. Game Two Houston 1, UTEP 0 Love moves to 11-3 in the circle and registered her second double-digit strikeout game this season. Her season best is 12 Ks against Centenary on Feb. 23. She also limited UTEP to three hits and no runs. After being held scoreless through the first five innings of the game, Houston scored a single run in the sixth after junior Haley Valis hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Klinkert who reached base on a single down the left field line. Up Next Houston will play host to the 2008 Conference USA Softball Tournament May 8-10 at Cougar Softball Stadium. The first day of the tournament will feature five games beginning at 9 a.m. There will be two semifinal games at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Championship game is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and will air on CBS College Sports Network.
