Klinkert, Shamblin Named C-USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week

HOUSTON - Freshman Jennifer Klinkert and senior Angel Shamblin took home the weekly Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Klinkert as named the Co-C-USA Hitter of the Week award this season after going 6-for-9 and batting .667 in five Cougar wins through April 9-13. Two of the six hits were home runs giving her 11 for the season, which is second best on the team and tied for fourth in the UH single-season record books. Klinkert also had an .813 on-base percentage and helped the Cougars outscore its opponents 37-5 on the week. This is the second career Hitter of the Week award for the Chino, Calif., native. Klinkert shares the award with Rachel Folden of Marshall. Shamblin was named the C-USA Pitcher of the week after recording three wins and two saves in five appearances last week. She did not allow a single run and gave up just four hits moving her to 22-2 in the circle this season. In 20.2 innings of work Shamblin racked up 24 strikeouts and two walks. Her 24 strikeouts give her 192 for the season, which is the second-most strikeouts in Houston single-season history. The Davie, Fla., native held her opponents to a .060 batting average and she holds a 0.56 ERA this season. She also went 3-for-7 (.429) at the plate in Houston's five games. This is the 14th career Pitcher of the Week award for Shamblin and her fifth this season. Houston also recorded its fourth C-USA series sweep this season with three wins over ECU on April 12-13. The Cougars will be back on the field April 16 in a double-header against Baylor before heading on the road for a C-USA series against Tulsa on April 19-20.
