Softball Prepares to Host Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team will host Louisiana-Lafayette in a doubleheader on April 30 at Cougar Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm with the second game set to start at 6pm.

Following the second game, the Cougars will hold a ring ceremony to honor the 2007 Conference USA regular season and tournament championships.

The ninth-ranked Cougars are 44-7 overall and 18-2 in C-USA. They swept UAB last weekend, clinching their second consecutive C-USA regular season title. Houston also tied a program best for single season win, matching the 44 wins reached in 2007.

Junior Jessica Valis was named the C-USA Hitter of the Week for her performance last week against UAB and in a single game against Sam Houston State. She went 8-for-14 for a .571 batting average. She leads the team with at .450, which is the 11th best batting average in the nation.

The Cougars have a combined 64 home runs, a single-season record. They are led by junior Laurie Wagner's 16 home runs. She needs one more to tie the single season record of 17 set by Kristen Glowacz in 2005.

The 16th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns enter the contest with a 39-10 overall record. Holly Tankersley leads the team with a .459 batting average, including a team-best 18 home runs. Donna Bourgeis has a team-best 0.90 ERA and is 13-2 in the circle.

Houston is 1-6 in the all-time series against UL Lafayette. The two programs met last season in Lafayette with the Ragin' Cajuns winning both games with scores of 5-0 and 14-0.

Houston will close out the regular season with a three-game series against UTEP on May 3-4 at Cougar Softball Stadium. First pitch of the Saturday doubleheader will be at 1pm, with a single game on Sunday at 1pm. In between the two games on Saturday, UH will hold a ceremony to honor the four seniors. The seniors include, Angel Shamblin, Barbie Love, Amanda Grote and Courtney Spittler.
