Oct. 5, 2007
HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team swept its seven singles matches today in the first day of the Cougar Fall Draw at the John E. Hoff Courts. In doubles the Cougars went on to send the duo of Lynley Wasson and Neila Starratt in the final round of the Doubles Flight C. Houston took the courts for singles matches as early as 8:00 a.m., and finished at noon with seven singles wins. Leila Salek lead the Cougars with the first win in the Singles Flight B defeating Koruc from Sam Houston State (6-3, 6-1). Lucy Forward followed Salek with a win and a matching score against New Mexico State's Costa. Next off the courts were Vicky Simpson in an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Sam Houston's Martinez and Jordan McCombs taking out Parrado from future regular season opponent Southern Miss. Wasson and Starratt held down the Singles Flight D with a pair of wins before advancing all the way to the final round in the doubles draw. Wasson took on Stephen F. Austin's Smolinakova coming out with a 6-2, 6-2 victory while Starratt forced out Dyckman from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a three set tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. Izabella Glinska rounded out the singles wins in the Flight G Round Robin in her first match against Vallasana from Lee College. Doubles action proved to be a little more difficult when the Cougars returned to the courts after a four-hour rain delay. Simpson and Forward paired up to make it to the semifinal round before bowing out with a loss to New Mexico State's top-seeded Fagegaltier and Discordia (8-6). Starratt and Wasson will take the courts in the final round against NMSU with plans on wining the Doubles Flight C.
Action begins against tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. where the singles will begin the semifinal rounds. For complete results visit www.UHCougars.com. Complete Houston Restults Quarterfinals Semifinals Singles |
