ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a pair of games in the season-opening HSU Baseball Invitational, defeating College of the Southwest 16-4 and falling to Oklahoma Baptist 12-6 in action at Hunter Field on Saturday. The Cowboys are now 3-1 after the opening weekend and will host Lubbock Christian for a single game, Tuesday at 3 p.m. Hardin-Simmons 16, College of the Southwest 4 (7-inning run rule) In the nightcap, the Cowboys jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first three innings. Taylor Berlin had a bases loaded walk, James Gage had a two-run single and Kyle Post had a sacrifice fly in a four-run first for the Cowboys. Ryan Stepp had a two-run single in the second inning and Kevin Ellison had a RBI single to right in the third. CSW scored their first two runs in the fourth inning on a pair of singles, a double and a sacrifice fly. Berlin had a two-run single in the fifth and James Gage followed that up with a two-run home run to right center. CSW scored two more runs in the fifth, before HSU exploded for five runs in the sixth. Post had an RBI single, J.T. Armstrong had an RBI triple. Stepp had a two-run triple and Brian Weeks had a RBI ground out in the inning. Stepp and Gage each had four RBIs for the Cowboys and six players had two hits in the 16-hit attack. Eric Roten got the win out of the bullpen in his first HSU action of his career. Oklahoma Baptist 12, Hardin-Simmons 6 The Cowboys took a 6-3 lead after the first three innings, but four errors in a two inning stretch allowed the Bison eight runs and the Cowboys could not overcome it. James Gage took the loss for the Cowboys as he allowed eight unearned runs in one and two-third innings of work. Gage and Taylor Berlin each had two RBIs for the Cowboys. |
