Cowgirls Advance To ASC Semifinals

TYLER, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament with a 77-65 win over Mississippi College Friday afternoon at the Harrington Patriot Center on the campus of UT-Tyler.

HSU jumped out to a 12-4 lead early on, before standout forward Ashley Allen injured her knee. Senior guard Rachel Cisneroz picked up the slack for the Cowgirls as she had 18 points in the first half and finished with 25 points. HSU led at halftime 39-33.

The Cowgirls took the ball inside in the second half and freshman center Lindsey Newcombe scored 12 of her 20 points in the second half. HSU led only 58-55 with 6:18 to play, but HSU went on a quick 8-0 run to ice the game away. Newcombe had six of the eight points in the run.

HSU shot 50 percent in the game, including 13-for-25 in the second half. HSU had only 12 turnovers in the game, while forcing 18.

Bo Warm had 12 points for the Cowgirls. Rosemary Green had 16 points to lead Mississippi College. The Choctaws ended their season with a record of 15-11.

The Cowgirls are now 21-5 on the year and they will play No. 2 Howard Payne in the semifinals. The Yellowjackets improved to 26-0 with a 76-61 win over Louisiana College in the first quarterfinal. The game is set for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
