Cowgirls Split at Schreiner

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball team split a doubleheader at Schreiner Friday night, winning the first game 3-2 and falling 5-3 in the nightcap in the ASC openers for both schools.

In the first game, HSU jumped on top with a run in the top of the first inning. Courntey Clark was hit by a pitch and stole second base. After a strikeout, Sadye Hill drove her in with a single. Schreiner took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. The Mountaineers had three hits in the inning including RBI single by Gonzales and Jendruech. Rutkowski led off the inning with a triple.

The Cowgirls retook the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth. Hill led off with a single and Callie Rice pinch ran for her. Lydia Bradley singled Rice to third. Bradley stole second. Kourtney Bailey singled in Rice. Tana Thomas pinch ran for Bailey and scored on a single after Lydia Bradley was thrown out at the plate.

Hill had three hits for the Cowgirls in the game. Laura Rawlings earned the win by scattering four hits in a complete-game win. She struck out 10.

In the nightcap, HSU took the lead with a run in the third inning. Clark had a one-out double and moved up on a Heather Cobb sacrifice bunt. Hill was intentionally walked and Lydia Bradley came through with an RBI single. Schreiner scored in the bottom of the third.

Rutkowski singled and scored on a Eichman double. HSU added another run in the fifth when Cobb doubled and after Hill was intentionally walked again both Cobb and Hill moved up on a double steal. Cobb came in to score on an error. Clark made it 3-1 HSU with a run in the sixth as she doubled in Cricket Criner, who had reached on an error.

Schreiner scored four runs in the sixth to make it 5-3. They put together four hits in the inning.

Lacie Cole took the loss for the Cowgirls. She worked five and one-third innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Kalyn Rosser finished out the game for the Cowgirls. Clark and Thomas had two hits for the Cowgirls.

HSU is 7-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. Schreiner is now 6-8 and 1-1 in league play. The two teams will play an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday. --- HSU ---
