Box Score

Niles, Ohio- The UIC baseball team could not overcome an early Youngstown State lead in suffering a 4-3 loss in the twinbill opener between the two teams at Eastwood Field on Saturday.

The Flames (19-12, 8-3 Horizon League) fell behind by three runs after two innings when the wind aided Joe Iacobucci's fly ball to right in the second, sending the drive over the wall for a two-run shot that put the Penguins (12-19, 5-3) ahead 3-0.

UIC chipped away. Kevin Coddington hit a two-out RBI double in the sixth, and Steve McGuiggan's RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh cut the deficit down to one.

A Penguin sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh put Youngstown State back up by a pair. The Flames answered in the next half-inning on Tony Altavilla's two-out RBI single that brought UIC back within a run.

The tying run was in scoring position for the Flames in the ninth, but Ty Rubio's hard-hit grounder down the first base line was corralled by a diving Anthony Munoz to end the game.

Starter Mike Kool went the distance, tossing 90 pitches and allowing just one run in the final six frames.
