Track & Field Competes At Chicagoland Championships
April 5, 2008 Naperville, Ill. - Event titles by Mike Savegnago, Ezekiel Sayon, and Idara Essien highlighted the UIC men's and women's track and field teams over the weekend at the Chicagoland Championships. Savegnago won his second career decathlon championship scoring a career-best 6,204 points. He also managed to break personal-best performances in the 110-meter hurdles (:17.00), pole vault (4.75m), and the javelin (37.16m). Sayon, making his first outdoor debut for the Flames, picked up his first event title of the outdoor season by winning the 100-meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 11.05 seconds. Steve Royal shined in the 800-meter run, placing fourth with a time of 1:56.20. Terell Williams had a nice outing in both the track and field events. Williams placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.60 meters and finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.03 seconds. Joseph Mbari put in a solid effort in 5,000-meter run. He picked up a sixth place finish with a time of 15:08.31. In the field events, Joe Bailey posted UIC's best finish, taking fifth in the hammer throw with a heave of 45.89 meters. On the women's side, Essien took home the triple jump title with a leap of 12.03 meters. In the hammer throw, Kristen McMurray (43.85m), Monique Bostert (43.20), and Jennifer Savickas (41.34m) posted top marks for the Flames finishing in 5th, 6th, and 7th place. McMurray tallied a career-best mark in the event.
Ashley Dawson also placed well for the Flames in the field events, taking seventh in her first outdoor appearance with a mark of 38.40 meters in the discus. In the track events, Olivia Myers came away with UIC's best finish in her outdoor debut. The freshman placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:34.54. Other notable performances for the women's squad included a mark of 2.59 meters in the pole vault for Sarah Welch and a time of 13:03.36 for Danyelle Somerfield in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. UIC will be back in action on Saturday, April 12 at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Meet at the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. |
