Softball Downs Detroit To Open Series, 7-2

Detroit, Mich. - The UIC softball team handed Detroit a 7-2 loss to open the three-game series this afternoon at Buysse Ballpark in Michigan. Sarah Clynes earned her 12th win in the circle with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Melissa Marinacci was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs. Stephanie Chavez, Carly DeMarco and Alicia Abbott each totaled two hits. Chavez tallied a team-best four RBI. Breana Sesoko put the Titans on the board in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single, sending Jacqueline Nortman home. Marinacci led off the top of the second with a hit down the right field line. Brooke Frydendall followed with a double just short of the fence in left field. Chavez grounded out to second base, sending Marinacci home to tie the score. Frydendall scored after Claire Donyanavard reached on an error from the Detroit shortstop. Ashlee Ackerman scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning. Chavez drove Abbott home on a single to right field for a three-run lead (4-1). Ellen Sinclair cut the deficit to one run for Detroit on a solo home run to right center in the bottom of the fourth. Chavez picked up an RBI in the fifth. Clynes scored in the top of the sixth on an RBI double to left center from Abbott. Chavez earned her fourth RBI in game one in the top of the seventh on a ground out to the shortstop, sending Marinacci home (7-2).
UIC plays the second game of the doubleheader this afternoon. |
