Andrea Giczewski Takes 100-Yard Freestyle Title On Final Day Of Swimming And Diving League Championships
Feb. 23, 2008
Akron, Ohio - The UIC swimming and diving squads concluded the 2008 Horizon League Championships Saturday evening with an array of top performances, including three school records, from the Flames. Andrea Giczewski capped off her career in style, claiming the 100-yard freestyle crown with a new school record of 50.96. Since initially setting the school record in the 100 free at last year's league championships, Giczewski has shaved 1.03 seconds off of her highly impressive mark. Andrew Schmitt stunned league veterans in the 200-yard butterfly finals with a runner-up finish. The freshman claimed his inaugural All-Horizon League Second Team honor with a 1:48.04 effort, achieving the NCAA "B" cut time of 1:48.07. Even more impressive is that Schmitt came into the championships with a season-best time of 1:52.75, the seventh-best time in the league throughout the regular season. He also smashed the six year-old school record, previously set at 1:52.08 by Enric Claret. Kelly Hashoian lowered her own school record at the championships, placing third in the 1650-yard free in 17:24.25. The freshman distance sensation broke her own 500 and 1000-yard free records earlier in the week. On the boards for the Flames, Sonia Peterson placed fourth in the three-meter finals with a score of 231.00. Tristan Oleynik improved upon his finish earlier in the week, taking fifth in the one-meter finals with a 249.75 effort. The men's 400 free relay, the final event of the championships, saw the Flames come within .04 seconds to defend last years title in the same event, but came up short, placing second in 3:00.80.
All in all, the Flames broke seven school records throughout the four-day competition. Both teams finished the championships in fourth place, with the men tallying 572 points, improving upon the squad's 2007 finish of 547.5 points. The women left Ohio with 393 points. Wright State claimed the men's title with 794 points and the Green Bay women's team took the league crown with 832 points. The same teams entered the meet as the defending champions from 2007. |
