NORMAL, Ill. -
The 2008 Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame class was officially announced Monday, and the class spans over four decades in Redbird intercollegiate athletics history. The 2008 inductees include: Bruce Ewen (men's track and field), ISU's first All-American thrower; Dan Freed (baseball), a 1988 first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection; Andy Isaacson (men's gymnastics), a three-time All-American on the pommel horse; Cindy Kaufmann (women's basketball), a three-time All-Gateway Conference honoree; Kathy Schiedwind (athletic training), a 30-year veteran in sports medicine; and Angie Taylor (women's track and field), a nine-time Gateway champion.
In addition to the 2008 Hall of Fame class, long-time bench crew volunteer and former Redbird Club president Jeff Fritzen will be honored with the Campbell "Stretch" Miller Award. The award is named for Campbell Miller, a former Redbird athlete who went on to broadcast Illinois State games in the 1940s before joining the St. Louis Cardinals broadcasting team. The award named in his honor celebrates the contributions of those whose main services were not playing or coaching, but were important to the program's success.
The honorees will be officially induced during the Hall of Fame banquet at 8 a.m. Oct. 18 in the Brown Ballroom of the Bone Student Center on the Illinois State University campus. The class will also be recognized during halftime of the Illinois State-Missouri State football game later that day. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Tickets for the Hall of Fame ceremony are $25 per person and can be purchased through The Redbird Club office. To order tickets for the event or for more information, please call Anne Campbell at 309/438-3803.
